Your Herb-Infused Guide to a Good Night's Sleep

Like cannabis, honey has been used in medical purposes for thousands of years and it has been known for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties.

In fact, adding honey to your nightly routine—having just a tea spoon before bed—increases insulin levels. This, in turn, helps tryptophan to release in the brain. It is known that tryptophan will convert to serotonin, which is known as the hormone of good mood, pleasure and joy. Serotonin will then convert to melatonin, which is necessary for good sleep. Melatonin will maintain your blood sugar levels under control and it will help you sleep better.

This in combination with a tried-and-true sleepy “indica” strain is a recipe for an amazing night’s sleep, or at least a pretty damn good nap.

You may ask, why not just have cannabis-infused honey? That’s very well an option too! But if you’re like me, one teaspoon in a cup of honey can easily turn into five. Personally, I enjoy the ritual of smoking. And after, a tea spoon of raw honey is how I get my dose of antioxidants and an instant immune system boost.

Other herbs that are great for sleep:

Chamomile

Chamomile is amazing for sleep patterns, immunity, and menstrual cramp relief — but my favorite use is for arthritis and osteoporosis. Chamomile goes straight to the bones, stimulating osteo-based cells, lubricating joints, and reducing inflammation from the inside out.

Lavender

Not only do I grow lavender plants for medicinal use in my tea, bath, and skin care, but I also use lavender oil for aromatherapy. Put 2 to 10 drops on your pillow at night for a restful sleep. Boil a pot of water, add organic lavender essential oil, and inhale deeply for an amazing relaxing at-home spa ritual.

Herbs good for dreams:

Passion Flower

If you consume cannabis quite often you may have noticed dreaming is rather hard to do. Passion flower serves as a great tool to relax the nerves and brain just enough to help bring on a sleep state. Scientific studies have shown that passion flower reduces anxiety naturally, without any side-effects currently known. Its roots and leaves contain alkaloids that interact with the brain to produce anti-depressant responses and increase the effects of mind-altering drugs. Also, it has been said that the plant helps to induce a powerful imagination, which is why it appears on many lists of natural lucid dream triggers. *

Mugwort

An perfect remedy for both sleeping and dreaming, mugwort is known for its seemingly supernatural properties and distinctive but sweet taste. The history of Mugwort invites us into the realm of the mystical while having proven its versatile benefits for human health in general, such as its capacity to aid digestion, reduce anxiety, and promote relaxation. It’s especially good for inducing deep, deep states of sleep and lucid dreaming.

My favorite cannabis cultivars for sleep:

Lemon OG

Lemon OG, also known as Presidential Kush or Lemon OG Kush, is a hybrid cannabis strain, 60/40 Indica. Lemon OG provides a quick-acting, uplifting, and creative experience initially which is great for someone who likes to journal before bed. Gradually, a relaxing and sleepy head sensation rushes over for a heavy feel. It’s citrus smelling with fruity undertones.

Purple Punch

Purple Punch is the sweet and sedating union of two indica-dominant strains, Larry OG with Granddaddy Purple. Purple Punch instantly settles the mind and calms the body, initially landing between the eyes and settling down into the limbs. The aroma is unmistakable, sweet and pungent.

* A lucid dream is a dream during which the dreamer is aware that they are not dreaming. During lucid dreaming, the dreamer may be able to have some control over the dream characters, narrative, and environment.
