Ritual Baths for Purification and Restoration

A purification ritual is a ceremony that involves the use of water, smoke, fire, herbs and other substances. These rituals may be performed by individuals or in community. In general, purification rituals are intended to bring about a sense of spiritual renewal and to prepare individuals or communities for subsequent ceremonies.

A ritual bath is a type of bath that is used for religious and spiritual purposes in many traditions. If you’re familiar with the concept of baptism that you can draw a correlation from that perspective. It is typically a pool of water that has been specially consecrated for the purpose of ritual purification. In some traditions, taking a ritual bath is considered a necessary initial practice to spiritually cleanse oneself in preparation for rites of passage, significant life events, to mark the end of a period of mourning or to usher in a new beginning.

There are many ways to approach the ritual bath but ultimately it is drawn with an intention. A ritual bath can serve as a tool for grounding, auric cleansing to declutter the field of energy that surrounds your body, or cord-cutting for restoring an energetic deficiency in order to re-establish healthy boundaries.

I first learned about ritual baths and the power of cleansing not only the physical body but emotional, spiritual and mental bodies when developing a deeper understanding of herbs, fruits, precious stones and crystals, and ways our energetic bodies need to be cleansed regularly. There are man books I read on the topic and ultimately began to intuit what I needed based on the things I was called to add to my bath water based on what I wanted to focus on.

In the winter months I like to work with citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits, and tangerines because they have powerful, health-promoting properties. We know that they are good for fortifying the immune system throughout the cold months. But they also can be used for cleansing, healing, and purifying and call in the energy of the sun. I like to use the orange peels and grapefruit peels I have left over after juicing along with tangerine oil and lemon essential oil.
